Located in Plymouth County, Hingham is located on Hingham Bay, in Boston Harbor, and bordered by the communities of Weymouth, Hull, Rockland, Norwell, Scituate and Cohasset.
The earliest English settlers arrived in 1633 to what they originally called Bare Cove. When it was incorporated in 1635, the name was changed to Hingham.
In 1681, Hingham’s 140 families raised money to construct the Old Ship Church. Still in use today, it is recognized as the oldest wooden church structure and the oldest church building in continuous use in America.
Steeped in history, during the time of the American Revolution, the population reached 2000. Approximately 600 men from Hingham served in that war. The period following the war was a quiet one in which the economy flourished. Fishing, farming, shipping and milling were the primary occupations.
Today, Hingham is home to some of the larger employers on the South Shore:
- Talbots – Women’s Clothing and Women’s Apparel
- Linden Ponds Retirement Community
- National Heritage Insurance Company
- Golden Boxer, LLC
- Harbor House Rehab and Nursing Center
Hingham is also known for its unique shopping and dining experiences with:
- Derby Street Shops – A unique outdoor shopping center with 65 shops and restaurants located directly off Route 3 at Exit 15.
- Hingham Center Shopping – A quaint downtown with 30+ stores and multiple restaurants, including Tosca.
- The Launch at Hingham Shipyard – This facility is located just off Route 3A. It consists of 40 stores and restaurants, as well as a movie theater. This location is known for the Wahlburgers. (Think the Wahlbergs.)
Hingham is governed by an open town meeting with a Town Administrator and 3 elected Board of Selectmen.
Hingham’s recent census reports approximately 23,000 residents. Estimated median household income is $109,361. Median home price is $740,000. For fiscal year 2017, the real estate tax rate for Hingham is $12.25 for residential, commercial and industrial properties.
There are numerous educational opportunities in Hingham. The public schools consist of: 4 elementary schools East Elementary, William L. Foster Elementary, Plymouth River Elementary and South Elementary that serve kindergarten through 5th grade, Hingham Middle School 6th-8th and Hingham High School 9th-12th.
If you are interested in private schools there is Derby Academy for Pre-K to 8th grade, Notre Dame Academy, a Catholic School for Girls 7-12th grade, St. Paul School, Pre-K to 8th grade, Old Colony Montessori School for Pre-K to 3rd grade and La Escuela Language Academy that starts at infancy and continues to 5th grade.
The last school is the South Shore Educational Collaborative which provides specialized educational and residential programs and services for students and adults diagnosed with a wide range of intellectual, educational, emotional, social, physical and/or medical challenges.
Hingham was recently named a 2016 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The community also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care.
